RETREATS FOR ACTIVISTS

Often in conflict situations, social movements are fueled by anger and hatred of violent, oppressive forces. Many activists we work with, particularly from the Burma democracy movements, have experienced intense burn out and disillusionment from years of struggle with a constant sense of urgency and anger.

Working with these activists, who recognized a disconnection with their spiritual traditions in their life in exile, IWP initiated a retreat program helping to prioritize time for personal reflection and rejuvenation. Our retreats, led by progressive, activist spiritual teachers from different faiths and perspectives, are usually 3-4 days and integrate meditation, silent meals, community work meditation (such as working in the garden or earth building, etc.), and time for walking and biking in a peaceful, rural environment.

To date, IWP has organized four retreats for activists from Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and western allies who work with these movements.
